West Midlands Police Active Citizen Grants Awarded

Midlands based Project Initiative CIC have been selected by West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner to deliver ‘Street Aid’ to help make targeted areas within West Midlands a safer place to live.

The grant, awarded as part of the Active Citizens Fund which is monies seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act, was distributed to the organisation by local policing teams who feel their local communities will benefit from the programme.

Street Aid was launched earlier this year and is designed to help individuals prepare for and respond to difficult, and violent, situations in a pro-active way. It not only equips individuals with the skills to make an informed choice when responding to situations involving conflict but also provides individuals with lifesaving first aid skills to respond to an incident should a violent situation occur.  Street Aid is very much focussed on delivering practical, real life first aid skills by empowering the individual to preserve life until the emergency services arrive if it is safe to do so.

In 2018, 700 school children in West Midlands were victims of knife crime and over 800 children were found in possession of a knife; statistics which must not be replicated.

The funding will enable Projective Initiative to deliver Street Aid to over 800 at risk individuals aged 14-24 living within Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

The CIC’s founder and director Christopher Gowlett said: “We’re really excited to be working closely with the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner to roll Street Aid out to hundreds of young people in key areas of both cities. It’s great that Street Aid can be part of a multi-agency approach in reducing the escalating violence and fatalities linked to knife crime”.
